Holloway House is a community within a Community.
We encourage everyone to pursue their own interests, and participate in communal life if
they wish. To this end we organise a broad range of social events and activities, both in
the House and involving the wider village community.

Abbeyfield Quorn organises events frequently throughout the year. Many of these are
regular events such as coffee mornings, but there are also many one-off events to
celebrate special occasions. Some typical events are:
Jubilee
Jubilee To celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee we
decked the house in Union flags and balloons and held a special tea on June 1st. A very
special cake and balloons decorated the tables. A group photo was taken to mark the
occasion and a silver spoon was presented to each resident.
Attempt to knit the longest scarf
Residents and 'Friends' knitted many feet of scarves to support an attempt by the local
children's hospice to break the world record. The village of Quorn helped, completing a
scarf that encircled our parish church five times and which raised well over £3000 in
sponsorship.
Speakers
We try to have at least one speaker or some form of entertainment each month.
Outings
Each year we organise a canal boat trip on board a boat for people with limited mobility
Coffee Mornings
These bring old friends and newcomers to the house. The 'Friends" of Holloway House
run them and these are the source of revenue for outings, presents, decorations etc
Bird Box
Encouraged by a 'Friend' and funded by a
Lottery Grant, the local RSPB installed a nesting box on an outside wall of the house,
complete with an internal light and miniature camera. This is connected to the TV in the
residents' lounge. A pair of bluetits successfully reared ten chicks, which made
compulsive viewing for residents, staff and visitors. In 2008, five more chicks were
raised. We are hoping that the birds will return annually.
Monthly Service
A once-monthly service is held in the lounge for all who wish to attend - residents,
staff, volunteers, friends and neighbours. Our four ministers, Anglican, Methodist,
Baptist and Roman Catholic take the service in rotation.
Poetry Prose and Music
Usually led by Thora, a 'friend'. Visitors and residents bring poems or a piece of prose
of their choice and read them aloud for everyone to enjoy.
Video Afternoons
Stella, a 'Friend', brings to the house a previously chosen video and shows it, offering
companionship and a different 'face'.
Christmas Celebrations
The House is decorated. The Baptist Church Choir come
to lead a carol Service.
Some years, the Brownies or the local primary school choir come to entertain. Volunteers
act as waiters and washer-uppers at a special Christmas luncheon for residents and staff.
We employ outside cooks on this occasion. Residents and staff receive gifts.
Birthdays
Each resident's birthday is marked with a party and a birthday cake, and a present and
cards is provided by the 'Friends'.
Easter
This is celebrated with gifts and cards.
Knitting for Overseas
Our residents and 'Friends' who knit have made sweaters, blankets and toys for refugees.
Our contact is the daughter of one of our ex-residents.
